{"id":3925,"date":"2011-03-10T18:42:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-10T23:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasetaro.com\/blog\/?p=3925"},"modified":"2011-06-14T14:56:10","modified_gmt":"2011-06-14T18:56:10","slug":"new-npr-sting-video-shows-execs-willing-to-except-donation-from-alleged-muslim-brotherhood-front-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasetaro.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/10\/new-npr-sting-video-shows-execs-willing-to-except-donation-from-alleged-muslim-brotherhood-front-group\/","title":{"rendered":"New NPR Sting Video Shows Execs Willing to Accept Donation From Alleged Muslim Brotherhood Front Group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A newly released video from James O\u2019Keefe&#8217;s Project Veritas indicates National Public Radio executives\u00a0 intended to accept a $5 million donation from a fictitious Muslim Brotherhood front group, the\u00a0 Muslim Education Action Center (MEAC) Trust.<\/p>\n<p>NPR maintains they &#8220;refused&#8221; the check multiple times, but the video  released today clearly shows NPR&#8217;s Senior Director of Institutional  Giving, Betsy Liley, telling a member of the fictitious Muslim charity  that NPR could help\u00a0 shield the charity from a  government audit of  NPR&#8217;s books by accepting  the donation anonymously:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"595\" height=\"335\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P64rmpnT32U?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As the Daily Caller <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2011\/03\/10\/new-video-npr-was-going-to-accept-muslim-education-action-center-donation-and-hide-it-from-the-government\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> the video report details phone calls and an e-mail exchange between Ms. Liley and an undercover investigator identified as Ibrahim Kasaam:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When a man posing as Ibrahim Kasaam asked, \u201cIt sounded like you were  saying NPR would be able to shield us from a government audit, is that  correct?\u201d NPR\u2019s senior director of institutional giving, Betsy Liley, responded, \u201cI think that is the  case, especially if you are anonymous. I can inquire about that.\u201d  According to conservative James O\u2019Keefe, whose Project Veritas organization conducted the NPR sting organization, the man posing as  Kasaam made two follow-up phone calls to Liley after their lunch.<\/p>\n<p>Liley said a $5 million donation would amount to about \u201c10 years of support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kasaam follows up by asking: \u201cThe fact that NPR is not only a  tax-exempt organization, but also receives direct contributions from the  government \u2014 does that invite some sort of government oversight or  government examination of contributions, et cetera?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liley answered: \u201cThey have audited our programs at times and, I  think, as part of that, they can look at our audited financials. If you  are concerned in any way about that, that\u2019s one reason you might want to  be an anonymous donor. And, we would certainly, if that was your  interest, want to shield you from that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>~ ~ ~<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following their phone calls, Liley checked with NPR\u2019s senior  management, and sent an e-mail to the man posing as Kasaam saying MEAC  was cleared to make an anonymous donation of $5 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>~ ~ ~ <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That e-mail directly contradicts NPR\u2019s public statements issued in the wake of O\u2019Keefe\u2019s first video. \u201cThe fraudulent  organization represented in this video repeatedly pressed us to accept a  $5 million check, with no strings attached, which we repeatedly refused  to accept,\u201d NPR spokeswoman Dana Davis Rehm said in NPR\u2019s official  response.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So the bottom line is they were lying about turning down the check&#8230; I&#8217;ll repeat what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasetaro.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/08\/senior-exec-npr-would-be-%E2%80%9Cfar-better-off%E2%80%9D-without-federal-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\">I said the other day<\/a>: cut the purse strings. Let NPR compete in the market place like everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>NPR&#8217;s official response is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/onmedia\/0311\/OKeefe_releases_another_NPR_video.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Update<\/strong> (Friday, March 11, 2011 @ 9:45 a.m.):<\/span> NPR has released e-mails showing its top staff raised questions about accepting a $5 million donation from the fictitious Muslim Education Action Center. Frankly the e-mails are a point in NPR&#8217;s favor, they clearly show Vivian Schiller explained to \u201cKasaam\u201d after his conversation with Ms. Liley that they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/blogs\/weigel\/archive\/2011\/03\/10\/npr-publishes-e-mails-from-top-staff-stating-problems-with-muslim-group-s-donations.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">couldn\u2019t shield the groups donation from the IRS<\/a>.
