{"id":3617,"date":"2010-10-22T17:15:11","date_gmt":"2010-10-22T21:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasetaro.com\/blog\/?p=3617"},"modified":"2010-10-24T10:20:53","modified_gmt":"2010-10-24T14:20:53","slug":"npr-fires-juan-williams-shoots-self-in-foot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasetaro.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/22\/npr-fires-juan-williams-shoots-self-in-foot\/","title":{"rendered":"NPR Fires Juan Williams; Shoots Self in Foot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NPR&#8217;s decision to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/21\/business\/media\/21npr.html?_r=2\" target=\"_blank\">fire<\/a> Juan Williams for remarks he made\u00a0 during an appearance on\u00a0 &#8220;The O\u2019Reilly Factor&#8221; Monday night has generated a considerable amount of media attention over the last of couple days.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Williams&#8217;s crime was apparently speaking honestly about a visceral reaction many Americans have in our post 911 world:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The move came after Mr. Williams, who is also a Fox News  political analyst, appeared on the \u201cThe O\u2019Reilly Factor\u201d on Monday. On  the show, the host,\u00a0<a title=\"More articles about Bill O'Reilly.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/o\/bill_oreilly\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Bill O\u2019Reilly<\/a>,  asked him to respond to the notion that the United States was facing a  \u201cMuslim dilemma.\u201d Mr. O\u2019Reilly said, \u201cThe cold truth is that in the  world today jihad, aided and abetted by some Muslim nations, is the  biggest threat on the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Williams said he concurred with Mr. O\u2019Reilly.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cI mean, look, Bill, I\u2019m not a bigot. You know the kind  of books I\u2019ve written about the civil rights movement in this country.  But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are  in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves  first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Williams also made reference to the Pakistani immigrant who  pleaded guilty this month to trying to plant a car bomb in Times Square.  \u201cHe said the war with Muslims, America\u2019s war is just beginning, first  drop of blood. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any way to get away from these  facts,\u201d Mr. Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>NPR said in its statement that the remarks \u201cwere inconsistent with  our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as  a news analyst with NPR.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ve watched the full segment a few times now&#8230; what I find so distasteful about Mr. Williams firing is the blatant hypocrisy of NPR.<br \/>\n<object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"495\" height=\"303\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/gRwok2Ffoys?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>If Mr. Williams remarks \u201cwere inconsistent with  our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as  a news analyst with NPR.\u201d what about the controversial remarks from other NPR personalities?<\/p>\n<p>Were Nina Totenburg&#8217;s 1995 remarks wishing <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/21\/what-wont-get-you-fired-from-n\" target=\"_blank\">AIDS  on Jesse Helms or one of his grandchildren<\/a> consistent with NPR&#8217;s editorial standards and practices?<\/p>\n<p>Were &#8220;All Things Considered&#8221; commentator Andrei Codrescu&#8217;s remarks calling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/InsideCover\/Andrei-Codrescu-juan-williams\/2010\/10\/22\/id\/374538\" target=\"_blank\">certain Christian beliefs crap<\/a> consistent with NPR&#8217;s editorial standards and practices?<\/p>\n<p>Were publicist Sarah Spitz&#8217;s remarks on the now-defunct Journolist listserv <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2010\/07\/21\/128669697\/comments-about-rush-limbaugh-cause-controversy\" target=\"_blank\">wishing death<\/a> on Rush Limbaugh consistent with NPR&#8217;s editorial standards and practices?<\/p>\n<p>And lastly were NPR CEO Vivian Schiller&#8217;s remarks at the Atlanta Press Club yesterday suggesting that Mr. Williams should have kept his feelings about Muslims between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/blogs\/nprs-ceo-questions-juan-williamss-sanity_511501.html\" target=\"_blank\">himself and his psychiatrist<\/a> consistent with NPR&#8217;s editorial standards and practices?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, she&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2010\/10\/21\/130728202\/npr-ceo-williams-views-of-muslims-should-stay-between-himself-and-his-psychiatrist\" target=\"_blank\">apologized<\/a> for that remark, but watch the video, watch her body language when she says it:<br \/>\n<object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"495\" height=\"303\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/fltlnt4j35k?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Spoke hastily? I&#8217;m not buying it.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Morrissey sums things pretty over at <a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2010\/10\/21\/npr-fires-juan-williams-over-comments-about-muslims-flying\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hot Air<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>With the exception of the very beginning, when Williams made the  statement that so offended NPR, Williams and Mary Katharine took a  position mainly opposite of Bill O\u2019Reilly, with both stating that the  distinction between extremist Muslims and the rest was an important one  to make, Mary Katharine more for strategic purposes, and Williams on  journalistic grounds.<\/p>\n<p>But then again, Williams was arguing for tolerance, and that  apparently violates NPR\u2019s \u201ceditorial standards and practices.\u201d\u00a0 Clearly,  NPR only wants opinion journalists that agree with the opinions of NPR,  and I mean <em>totally<\/em> agree.\u00a0 An NPR opinion journalist had  better not admit to having a normal human reaction about potential for  terrorism nine years after 3,000 Americans got killed by radical Muslims  on commercial air flights, or else.
