{"id":2790,"date":"2009-09-30T15:01:16","date_gmt":"2009-09-30T19:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasetaro.com\/blog\/?p=2790"},"modified":"2009-09-30T18:12:03","modified_gmt":"2009-09-30T22:12:03","slug":"gallup-61-of-americans-see-health-insurance-as-personal-responsibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasetaro.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/30\/gallup-61-of-americans-see-health-insurance-as-personal-responsibility\/","title":{"rendered":"Gallup: 61% of Americans See Health Insurance as Personal Responsibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/123332\/Many-U.S.-See-Health-Insurance-Personal-Responsibility.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">results of this new Gallup poll<\/a> aren&#8217;t really surprising, this is still a center right country that believes in traditional principles like limited government and individual responsibility&#8230; that more more than anything is what dogs Democrats in the health care debate:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a recent Gallup survey, 89% of Republicans, 64% of independents, and 61% of Americans overall say Americans themselves \u2014 rather than the government \u2014 have the primary responsibility for ensuring that they have health insurance. Six in 10 Democrats say the government should be primarily responsible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A system in which Americans are &#8220;primarily responsible&#8221; for their families&#8217; health insurance \u2014 as the new Gallup question is phrased \u2014 would not preclude having a government-based insurance program for the poor, such as the Children&#8217;s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or Medicaid. By the same token, public support for the government&#8217;s making sure &#8220;all Americans have healthcare coverage&#8221; \u2014 as other questions are phrased \u2014 isn&#8217;t tantamount to support for mandated health insurance or a universal government-run system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>An important principle behind the current push for healthcare reform is that healthcare is a basic right that the government ought to guarantee for all Americans.
