On Wednesday, only two days after he lifted President Bush\u2019s executive order banning federal funding of stem cell research that requires the\u00a0destruction of human embryos, President Barack Obama signed a law that explicilty bans federal funding of any “research in which a human\u00a0embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk\u00a0of injury or death.”<\/p>\n

The provision was\u00a0buried\u00a0in the 465-page\u00a0omnibus appropriations bill that Obama signed Wednesday.\u00a0 Known as the Dickey-Wicker amendment,\u00a0it has been included in the annual appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services every fiscal year since 1996.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Either he doesn’t read what he signs or he doesn’t care what he signs… Either way this just another embarrassment for the White House.<\/p>\n

Update<\/strong> (Saturday, March 14 @ 10:30 a.m.): The White House has confirmed<\/a> that in keeping with the language included in the Omnibus Spending Bill Pres. Obama signed into law on Wednesday, federal funding cannot be used in research that creates or destroys human embryos. Federal funding can be used in research that uses stem cells taken from embryos that are created or destroyed with private funding though.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
