The attack killed approximately 3,000 military personal and civilians and wounded approximately 1,300.<\/p>\n<p>Something you may not know the first shot in anger that morning was not fired by the Japanese&#8230;. It was fired at 0645 by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/photos\/sh-usn\/usnsh-w\/dd139.htm\" target=\"_blank\">USS Ward (DD-139)<\/a> at a Japanese midget submarine.
