The New York Times is reporting this morning that embattled New York Congressman Anthony Weiner has told friends he will step down:

Anthony D. Weiner has told friends that he plans to resign his seat after coming under growing pressure from his Democratic colleagues to leave the House, said a person told of Mr. Weiner’s plans.

His decision follows of revelations of his lewd online exchanges with women, said a person told of Mr. Weiner’s plans.

The news comes as Democratic leaders prepared to hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss whether to strip the 46-year-old Congressman of his committee assignments, a blow which would severely damage his effectiveness.

Congressman Weiner’s decision comes amid heightening pressure from Congressional Democrats who were scheduled to meet today to discuss stripping Rep. Weiner of his committee assignments which would have significantly reduced his influence and effectiveness.

Congressman Weiner reportedly informed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel of his decision to resign last night… His decision comes after his first face to talk with his wife, Huma Abedin, since news of his social-network indiscretions broke. Ms. Abedin had been traveling on business with her boss Secretary of State Hillary Clinton until yesterday.

I’m loath to wade into to this, but I think we may have reached a tipping point in Weinergate… I mean once you’ve lost the porn star, it’s all pretty much down hill isn’t it?

Anyway, jokes aside, one of Congressman Anthony Weiner’s twitter and email buddies, former porn star Ginger Lee held a press conference in New York today. Ms. Lee, who was flanked by her lawyer Gloria Allred, appears to be a paragon of virture compared to Congressman Weiner. Ms. Lee. says she remains a committed liberal, but has concluded that Rep. Weiner should resign:

“He asked me to lie about our communication,” Lee told a news conference in New York, flanked by celebrity attorney Gloria Allred. “I knew I couldn’t lie for him but I didn’t want to be the one who kicked him under the bus.”

“I think that Anthony Weiner should resign because he lied. He lied to the public and the press for more than a week,” she said. “If he lied about this, I can’t have much faith in him about anything else.”

And that folks, is what this is all about, if we can’t trust Congressman Wiener to be truthful about his personal conduct, how can we ever trust him to be truthful in his public conduct?

Frankly, I couldn’t care less about who or what he tweeted, his actions, while morally repugnant do not appear to have been criminal… What’s the old joke? In politics it’s not the crime, it’s the cover up that does you in.

Do us a favor Congressman and resign. Save yourself, your party and the nation further embarrassment.

From the Wall Street Journal:

Back when the housing mania was taking off, Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank famously said he wanted Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to “roll the dice” in the name of affordable housing. That didn’t turn out so well, but Mr. Frank has since only accumulated more power. And now he is returning to the scene of the calamity — with your money. He and New York Representative Anthony Weiner have sent a letter to the heads of Fannie and Freddie exhorting them to lower lending standards for condo buyers.

You read that right. After two years of telling us how lax lending standards drove up the market and led to loans that should never have been made, Mr. Frank wants Fannie and Freddie to take more risk in condo developments with high percentages of unsold units, high delinquency rates or high concentrations of ownership within the development.

Fannie and Freddie have restricted loans to condo buyers in these situations because they represent a red flag that the developments — many of which were planned and built at the height of the housing bubble — may face financial trouble down the road. But never mind all that. Messrs. Frank and Weiner think, in all their wisdom and years of experience underwriting mortgages, that the new rules “may be too onerous.”

Here we go again… Umm, congressman you do remember we how got into this mess don’t you? On the off chance you’ve forgotten it was, among other things, lowered lending standards that helped inflate the housing market to unrealistic levels. The last thing we thing we should be doing is repeating the mistakes that got us here.

Simply put Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are political creature and they have no better friend than Barney Frank. Congressman Frank needs to explain why he pushed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into underwriting loans to people who couldn’t afford them and then resisted every attempt to to tighten oversight of Fannie and Freddie.

Until he’s called to account for his actions in helping to create this mess he’s free to keep pushing the same bad ideas over and over.
